How to get your SRAM AXS bike ready to ride

Before you set off with your electronic SRAM AXS shifting system, you must first charge the battery and install it. You can find out how it works here.

You need

  • SRAM AXS battery
  • SRAM AXS charging dock
  • charging cable
  • power adapter

Step 1: Removing the battery / transport protection

  • When shipped, a transport protection is installed in the rear derailleur instead of the battery. You can remove it in the same way as the battery (as shown in the picture).
  • To do this, hold the battery in one hand. With your other hand, lift the locking lever on the rear derailleur upward.
  • You can then remove the battery rearward.

Step 2: Charging the battery

  • When shipped, the battery terminals are protected by a red transport lock. Remove it by pressing the locking tab upward and pulling the transport lock backward.
  • Now place the battery into the charging dock with the nose (underside) facing forward. Then press the top part into the charging dock until it clicks into place.
  • Connect the charging dock to a charging cable. Then connect the cable to a compatible mains adapter or a USB port.
  • While charging, the LED on the charging dock shines orange. Once charging is complete, it turns green.
  • Press the release button and remove the battery from the charging dock.

Step 3: Inserting the battery pack

  • Hold the locking lever on the rear derailleur up with one hand.
  • Insert the battery into the rear derailleur with the nose (underside) facing forward. Make sure the nose is seated in the corresponding mount on the rear derailleur.
  • Now press the top of the battery against the rear derailleur, too. Flip the locking lever until it clicks into place to secure the battery.
  • Finally, check that it is securely fastened.
  • Note: On some MTB rear derailleurs, you also need to install the protective battery cover.

Tips

  • If your rear derailleur does not respond to shifting commands even though the battery is charged, check the contacts first. After reinserting the battery, press the function button on the rear derailleur once.
  • The round cell battery in your shifter may also be empty. You can check this using the SRAM AXS app or by pressing the function button on the shifter. If the battery is still full, the indicator LED should be green.
  • In order to replace the round cell battery, flip the lever hood of the gear lever from bottom to top and use a coin to unscrew the battery compartment on the underside. The process is also explained in detail in this video from SRAM (YouTube). On SRAM flatbar shifters (MTB), the battery compartment is clearly visible on the back of the shifters.
