How to get your Di2 bike ready to ride (Full Wireless)

Before you set off with your electronic Shimano Di2 shifting system, you must first charge the battery and install it. You can find out how it works here.

You need

  • Shimano Di2 battery
  • Shimano Di2 charging dock
  • charging cable
  • power adapter

Note

This tutorial describes the charging process for Di2 systems with a removable battery (Full Wireless). For other shifting systems, go to the overview and select the right model.

Step 1: Removing the battery

  • In order to remove the battery from the rear derailleur, you must first remove the battery holder.
  • To do this, press the release lever (arrow) to the left and pull the battery compartment toward you. You can find a technical illustration from Shimano here.
  • Now, you can now pull the battery downward out of the rear derailleur.

Step 2: Charging the battery

  • Connect the charging dock to the mains adapter using the cable.
  • Insert the battery into the charging dock so that the two arrow marks are facing each other. Now press the battery into the charging dock until you feel a slight click.
  • Once the power plug is plugged in, the orange LED indicates that charging is in progress and turns off once the battery is fully charged (approx. 1 hour).
  • You can then remove the battery from the charging dock.

Step 3: Inserting the battery pack

  • Insert the battery into the rear derailleur with the contacts facing forward. Make sure the arrow points outward.
  • Align the battery holder with the derailleur’s guide rails, then press it into the derailleur until the locking lever clicks into place.
  • Finally, check that the holder is securely fastened and make sure the locking lever is fully engaged.
  • The rear derailleur is now ready for use again.

Tips

  • If your rear derailleur doesn't respond to shifting commands even though the battery is charged, the round cell battery in your shifter may be empty.
  • In order to check this, press both Di2 buttons on the right shift/brake lever at the same time for about 1 second. The indicator LED should now shine green (11–100%) or red (1–10%). Otherwise, the round cell battery must be replaced.
  • To do this, fold the lever hood down from top to bottom. Open the battery compartment on the side using a cross-head screwdriver and replace the round cell battery with a new one. The process is also explained in detail in this video from Shimano (YouTube).
